Number 9 September 2019
What equips us to follow Jesus’ directions, what gives us the will to seek God’s kingdom before our personal needs and desires? Relationship! Like any other meaningful endeavor our discipleship grows out of relationship, our relationship to God through the person of Jesus. Our commitment to follow Jesus’ way of generous sharing grows from our own closeness to Our Lord.
September is the edge of stewardship season. It is the time in which we begin to consider how much money and energy each of us will dedicate to the work of these parishes. It is the time in which we recommit ourselves to the work of God’s kingdom here in Ossining. This year, your visioning committee has spent time and effort in learning more about who you are as members of St. Paul’s and Trinity and also about how we together can take our talents out into the greater world to serve. In October, they will report back to you on their findings. The information they collected all relates to stewardship because it lists those things that we as members of the parishes value and also our common resources.
So, how do we turn our values and resources into action? Step one, through prayer. If we are to act as disciples we need to know the One whom we follow. Then the rest will fall into place. What we do in the year to come, what we give in the year to come, needs to grow from our relationship with the one who has given us all.
This stewardship season, I ask you to do one thing: pray. Before you sign that pledge card, pray. Ask God’s will in this and in everything having to do with our common life because God’s wishes and desires are “better than anything we can ask or imagine.”
Glad to be back among you…glad to be back home!
